DOES GENDER MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

Boys are characterized as being “into” their technological toys, and some have hoped to harness this enthusiasm and direct it toward reading. For instance, Harrison (2016) speculates that “it is certainly the case that there are gamelike features in using a laptop, a tablet, or a phone, and these may enhance boys’ motivation” (p. 222). As previously discussed, there are a number of popular myths about boys and reading, spurred by the performance gap between the male and female genders. When analyzing the data, we collected from tweens in the WASCBR, we decided to split the data for gender in order to determine whether speculation that boys would prefer to read books on screens could be proved in our data.
